Music Is Just A Bunch Of Notes was cut in 1972 in an upstairs storefront building above a coffee house on Minneapolis' West Bank. One of the counterculture's first entirely DIY efforts, it was engineered by 12-string guitar legend Dave "Snaker" Ray and released on his fledgling Sweet Jane label. All of the songs are Koerner originals; the tunes are sequenced with a cinematic eye and interspersed with weird spoken-word bits. The album includes several mainstays of John's repertoire, including the timeless "Everybody's Goin' For The Money," a song that sums up the uniquely Koernerian brand of existentialism as tidily as any. This CD is mastered from the original tapes and is reissued for the first time since the rare 1972 release.

Stephen Bradley - drums

The historical group known as Big Fat Mama started in 1979 from an idea of Piero De Luca, still the only proprietor of the band’s name. In its thirty-year experience, the group has so far recorded eight LPs or CDs and has played throughout Europe and in all the most important Italian festivals, sharing the stage with legends like Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Clifton Chenier Jr, Honeyboy Edwards, Legendary Blues Band, Jimmy Rogers, B. B. King, Blues Brothers Band, Albert Collins, James Cotton, Magic Slim, Sherman Robertson, Little Willie Littlefield and touring across Europe along with outstanding artists such as Louisiana Red, Eddie C. Campbell, Johnny Mars, Zora Young, J. Monque-D, Michael Coleman.

After a few years devoted to a much more rock sound, since 2002 the group took the way back to the Blues. The release of the CD I Been Around (Crotalo/New LM Records NLM 146 - 2007) has been the first milestone along the course of this comeback which has reached its aim recording in 2009 the CD Blues on My Side (Crotalo/New LM Records NLM 171) produced by Piero De Luca, Luigi Monge and Antonio "Candy" Rossi. Whether it draws inspiration from some masters of the genre such as T-Bone Walker or John Lee Hooker, revisits the New Orleans beat of Professor Longhair or winks at 1930s hokum blues or 1940s and 1950s Chicago blues, this CD is imbued with blues feeling and fully reflects Piero’s musical vision. All the songs on this CD are original, the lyrics are deliberately modern and deeply rooted and steeped in the genre at the same time in that they are meant to prove that blues music is not dying at all anywhere in the world, Italy included. Now the band features a four people line-up (two guitars, harp, bass, drums and three voices), performing great blues standards as well as the original tracks from the latest two albums. While carrying on live activity in venues and festivals, Big Fat Mama keeps on writing new songs in order to release further records.

Joe Willie Wilkins spent the majority of his career in the shadows as a session guitarist, playing behind Sonny boy Williamson II, Willie Love, Will Nix among others and off record with bluesmen such as Robert Lockwood Jr., Elmore James, Robert Nighthawk, Walter Horton and others.
Through his studio contributions, his time broadcasting on King Biscuit Time on KFFA and out of West Memphis on WDIA, and the sheer number of bluesman he worked with throughout the Delta, Wilkins exerted a sizable influence despite never cutting records under his own name until the 70's. Those who cite him as an influence include Pat Hare, Little Milton, Jimmy Rogers and Brewer Phillips. He stepped out of the shadows in the 70's performing at festivals, making television appearances and a long overdue full-length album.
As Luigi Monge wrote in the Encyclopedia of the Blues: "Wilkins incorporated in his playing the intensity of downhome blues, the elegance of jazz, and the power of urban sounds. His achievement transcends the quantity of recordings he left and has more to do with quality and originality." And as his supporter Jim O'Neal wrote: "One of the greatest blues guitarists Memphis has ever known".

The only child of Frank Wilkins, an accomplished bottleneck guitarist, Joe Willie became interested in music at a very early age.Wilkinswas born just southwest of Clarksdale in a tiny spot known as Davenport, Mississippi. Wilkins taught himself harmonica and often played with his father at local parties and dances in the Bobo, Mississippi, area, where his family had moved in 1933 to work on a farm. After being taught some fiddle by "Fiddlin’" Sam Harris and accordion by Walter "Pat" Rhodes, Wilkins learned guitar from his father, the members in his band, and phonograph records so well that he was nicknamed "The Walking Seeburg" after a brand of jukebox). His musical education was also enhanced by meeting several musicians around Clarksdale including Muddy Waters, Robert Lockwood and Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller).
After playing in the Mississippi streets and barrelhouses with Sonny Boy Williamson II (Aleck Miller) and Robert Lockwood, Wilkins briefly served in the U.S. Navy. From 1942 he regularly participated with his mentors and other fellow musicians in the famous radio program King Biscuit Time over KFFA in Helena, Arkansas, and with Robert Nighthawk (whose sister he married) in the Bright Star Flour show. At the end of the decade Wilkins often toured the South with a group known as the Four Aces (Sonny Boy Williamson II, Willie Love, Willie Nix). Wilkins moved to West Memphis in 1948 where he played with local musicians and met B.B. King whom broadcast with.

Wilkins first entered a studio as late as 1951, when he played guitar on the first recordings Sonny Boy Williamson II made for Lillian McMurry’s Trumpet Records in Jackson, Mississippi, where Wilkins acted as house guitarist for two years. Wilkins backed Sonny Boy on ten sides in 1951, four sides in 1952 and final three sides in 1953. One of the songs was “Mr. Down Child” a Robert Johnson composition that he never recorded. It was Robert Lockwood who transposed the song and taught it to Sonny Boy who recorded it on December 4th 1951. Lockwood recorded his version in 1973. It seemed to be a favorite of Wilkins' who cut the song as the b-side of his first 45 for the Mimosa label in 1973, another version was cut for Wilkins' debut album and another version appears on the soundtrack fro the BBC TV series The Devil's Music...Wilkins passed March 28, 1979 in Memphis.

12 - Algia Mae Hinton - Going Down This Road
13 - Algia Mae Hinton - Shine On
14 - Algia Mae Hinton - If You Want To Go To Heaven

Precious Bryant and Algia Mae Hinton have wandered through the century, singing lullabies to their children and grandchildren. Real, timeless, their music has travelled across the Atlantic, meandered between the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge Mountains, and settled into a style of fingerpicking a little reminiscent of Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmy Rodgers, or their buddy Elisabeth Cotton of this particular sound that travelled all the way from Europe and collided with Africa. Deep in the rubble of a forgotten South West, far away from the Mississippi, both river and State, the two fine fingerstyle guitarists play, evoking the tingle of rain on sheet metal. Gentle and unobtrusive, unaffected by a half- century of changes, they have salvaged the precious and youthful feel of the timeless blues: an enthralling and beautiful sound, distinctly feminine, with major chords and melancholy textures. Their more recent recordings have earned them some measure of success, and a few nominations and awards - what you have here is a selection of works from both grandmothers  as a tribute to the grand'sas I've never had. Precious Bryant was born in Talbot County, Georgia, in 1942. She was raised in a family of music-makers, in a village packed with stomping blues and spirituals. She soon developed her own inspired style of blues, away from the mainstream, with only her voice and her guitar. She played the Newport Folk Festival as well as concerts in Europe but mostly she stuck to Georgia and the surrounding areas. In 1967, she walked into a studio for the first time to record with George Mitchell. Three wonderful songs still remain from those sessions. Her music is simple, yet inspired, and speaks of daily struggles. Precious Bryant is one of the last living great blues women from the 20th century and still living in her mobile-home in the deep woods of Georgia. Algia Mae Hinton was born in Johnston County, North Carolina, in 1929, to a family of farmers. The youngest of 14, she was soon put to work in the fields. At the age of 9, her mother taught her the guitar. In 1965, after her husband's death, she was left alone to raise her 7 children. Despite those circumstances, Algia still managed to impress the musical arts on her household and to pass them on to her children. Music provided the family and the whole community with crucial solace throughout their trials and tribulations. Algia Mae plays the 6- and 12-string guitar, and the banjo. She's also an accomplished singer and a fantastic Buck dancer."

11 - Deep River Blues

Charley was born and raised in rural Delaware on a farm near Blackiston Crossroads. He started playing guitar at the age of nine. His travels carried him south to St. Augustine, Florida where he studied on the styles of Merle Travis and the late Gamble Rogers among others.

These days he makes his home in southeastern Utah and performs throughout the Intermountain West from Salt Lake City to Telluride,Co. He was the 1992 Utah State Flattop Champion, the 2002 Wyoming State Fingerstyle Champion and the winner of the 2003 Gamble Rogers Fingerstyle Competition.

"Full Circle" is a collection of thirteen songs and instrumentals by the extremely talented guitar player and singer Charley Simmons. Mr. Simmons accompanies his singing with masterful finger-style guitar music. His voice is a combination of dry, long-cut shag tobacco and honey, which is complemented perfectly by his guitar work. All the selections were played on a Breedlove C-25 Northwest. For you guitar aficionados and aficionadas, this is an extremely sweet, well-balanced guitar, punchy and quite piano-like in tone. The CD was recorded cleanly, without any over-produced effects. Just one voice, one guitar, pure and unprocessed. Turn up the volume, and it sounds like a live performance in your living room.

Some of the tunes are traditional, others are by writers such as Greg Brown, Bruce Cockburn, Keb'Mo', and Doc Watson. Two of the tunes are by Mr. Simmons. His closing tune of the CD, "Sunrise Over Sinbad," is breathtakingly beautiful. The compositions on the CD range in style from Delta to country blues, to Doc Watson-style to Akins-Travis-style fingerpicking. In the liner notes, Mr. Simmons cites Doc Watson, Chet Atkins,Merle Travis, but especially the late Gamble Rogers, as strong influences on his guitar style.

"Full Circle" includes an extremely energetic rendition of Doc Watson's "Southbound" and "Doc's Guitar," a heartfelt version of Greg Brown's "Your Town Now," an astute and haunting interpetation of Bruce Cockburn's "Pacing the Cage," an old favorite, Jesse Fuller's "San Francisco Bay Blues," and John Loudermilk's "Windy and Warm," which you will recognize instantly when you hear it. The seven other tunes are played with an overwhelming sense of competence, compassion, and soul.

Guitarist, mandolinist and songwriter Lino Muoio has been a part of the Italian Blues music scene for over 20 years, playing many gigs and festivals with his main band “Blue Stuff” with various appearances on National television, and participated in many recording sessions for a variety of artists in Italy.

Not many folks view the mandolin as a Blues instrument, but Lino believes the Blues and the Mandolin fit perfectly together!
After the first solo album (Blues on Me), he decided to dedicate an entire project to producing a fine piece of work dedicated to the Blues Mandolin.

The CD has fourteen original songs and English lyrics. There are no covers songs at all, and almost all of the songs were written and performed in collaboration with many fine musicians from all over the world. Some of those artists include: Mike Supnick of Swing Maniacs, Sebastiano Forti of Sweetwater Jazz Band, Bobby Ray Green of The Network Band, Lonnie Wilson and the Kompoz Community, Veronica Sbergia, and my group Blue Stuff.

The collaboration resulted in a diverse offering of styles, from the vintage country Blues inspiration of Yank Rachell to the Chicago style of Carl Martin, and a healthy dose of jazz, swing and bluegrass.

He is specifically known by boogie woogie connoisseurs for playing the authentic style from the era of celebrity Albert Ammons. They also recognize the very fluent and seemingly effortless way he plays the piano.
As from the first publication in 2006, his video’s and boogie woogie lessons on Youtube immediately drew and keep drawing the attention of many from all over the world.
Since then he performed at many jazz and boogie woogie occassions all over Europe, such as festivals in France, United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany and Holland.

David Herzel :
Eeco is supported on drums by David Herzel (Germany) He is certainly one of the most astonishing drummers of our time with a mind boggling concept of time, creativity and speed. David is a professional drummer for more than 20 years, a lot of people will know him from "The Original Contemporaries".

Betram Becher:
Bertram Becher played the keyboards in many different bands since he was 15 - ranging from "Beatles" to Rock. At the age of 24 he found the harmonica and it grew to be his first instrument. Since then Blues and Boogie were his first choice. He wrote the "Interactive Blues Harp Workshop" (CD Rom, Voggenreiter) together with world-class harmonica player Steve Baker in 1998.

We Juke Up In Here follows producers Jeff Konkel and Roger Stolle as they explore what remains of Mississippi’s once-thriving juke joint culture. The film is told largely from the vantage point of Red Paden, proprietor of the legendary Red’s Lounge in historic Clarksdale, Mississippi. Paden, a true Delta character and jack-of-all-trades, has been running his blues and beer joint for more than 30 years – providing one of the region’s most reliable live blues venues and an authentic stage for a cavalcade of veteran blues performers, both legendary and obscure. Some of the blues performers in the DVD/CD include Anthony “Big A” Sherrod, Terry “Harmonica” Bean, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, Big George Brock. Told through live music performances, character-driven interviews and rare on-camera blues experiences, viewers are taken below the surface of the quasi-legal world of real Delta jukes. We Juke Up In Here is a joint production of Broke & Hungry Records and Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art. You can watch trailers for the documemtary and purchase it here. He fashions his music with the raw energy and syncopated rhythms he absorbed from the count blues masters of the past like Son House, Blind Willie Johnson and Robert Johnson. In Jake Matson’s songs appear trains, phantom women, highways and towns, the comings and going of lovers and thieves. He sings with passion and plays his National guitar with a ringing intensity. Like the blues men he studies, Jake Matson has been taken far from home, but along the way he has cultivated a genuine feeling for the rollicking good time beat of the country blues.

Good Time Charlie has been described as “honest tradition-bearers with great love and respect for their craft”, at the same time being able to renew themselves and take the music further in a genre where originality and new ways of thinking have been rare for many years.

Garage-A-Go-Go! is a fusion of the raunchy garage rock of the 60s and the explosive and energetic sounds of soul  music? in a word: Grage Soul. A good tip for a good time!
After having taken a new course with the critically acclaimed Norwegian grammy-nominee Mojo Energy in 2008, this Garage-A-Go-Go! release is a stylish and uncompromising musical experience of unashamed high energy. Purified, unadulterated real music!

The band has a strong focus on obtaining the enormous power arising from a successful chemistry between the performing and expressive potential of the bandmembers  and the music itself, giving the lyrics and music a strong inner core.

The album was recorded at the legendary Duper Studio and produced by GTC and Yngve Leidulv Sætre (DumDum Boys, Kaizers Orchestra, deLillos, Datarock, Magnet).

Yngve Sætre has once again created a fresh, state of the art production, capturing and enhancing  the characteristic and authentic  Good Time Charlie-sound.

Georg Schroeter & Marc Breitfelder - Live At Blues Baltica ... On The Way To Memphis

Styles : Piano Blues, Harmonica Blues
Released : 2010
Lable : Analoghaus

01 - Sunnyland
02 - All Night Long
03 - Little Piece Of Paper
04 - Long As I Can See The Light
05 - Sugar & Spice
06 - Talk To Me
07 - Rush Hour
08 - Can't Be Satisfied
09 - Shake Your Boogie
10 - Runnin' On Faith
11 - Rock'n'Roll Queenie

Pianist Georg Schroeter and harmonica player Marc Breitfelder made history this past February, as they became the first Europeans to win the International Blues Challenge. Representing the Baltic Blues Society in Northern Germany, they took the title competing against approximately 100 solo/duo acts from around the world. Their most recent release, Live At BluesBaltica . . . On The Way To Memphis, captures their live performance to perfection. Though this recording is not only the pair, as it also includes David Herzel playing behind them on drums, they are at their peak here.

This is the band’s third live recording, which in all reality is the absolute best way to hear their music. Georg Schroeter is an exceptional pianist with strong vocals. Marc Breitfelder’s harmonica work is incomparable; he reach notes that soar well beyond the normal plain with such ease he appears to hardly be drawing any breath. Together they have been working with one another for twenty-one-plus years and make for a very fascinating sound that keeps the performance rolling and exciting as brilliantly displayed on this release recorded at the 2010 Eutin Blues Festival.

The performance contains a nice blend of original music and covers. What is exceptional here is the songs they have selected often are better known as guitar pieces which have cleverly been reworked to fit in their duet mixture, with Schroeter’s piano assuming the lead lines. Songs to note being done in this manner include tasty takes on Elmore James’ “Sunnyland,” Muddy Waters’ “Can’t Be Satisfied” and Eric Clapton’s “Runnin’ On Faith.” Love the honky-tonk roll that Schroeter takes during “Can’t Be Satisfied.” One of the most noteworthy covers has to be John Fogerty’s “Long As I Can See The Light,” which Schroeter delivers in his own personalized, beautiful incarnation. But the duo’s original songs are not to be overlooked either. “Sugar & Spice” is a romping little number that’ll catch your attention and the harmonica work on numbers like “Little Piece Of Paper” and “Rush Hour” will lead to the question just where does Breitfelder come up with these notes, they far out reach the cosmos and maybe the only other players today who can even compare might be Jason Ricci or Carlos del Junco, but even they may be outmatched. Incredible blowing!

All in all, Live At BluesBaltica is a tremendous outing for Georg Schroeter and Marc Breitfelder, clearly a convincing showing of why these guys took home the prize at the International Blues Challenge. Not to be overlooked. This disc carries a lot of amazing musical passion, energy and down-right fun.

As a young man he immersed himself in the Blues scene of Atlanta, learning at the feet of Blues legends Cora Mae Bryant, Neal Pattman, Cootie Stark, and Frank Edwards. Shelton is a collector and over the years has amassed a wealth of lyrics and melodies that none can touch; at the same time, his style and delivery are all his own. The 14 tracks on Shelton's first release are all traditional Country Blues and Gospel but they are delivered with a freshness and sincerity that will make you feel as if you are hearing them for the first time. -- Aaron Greenhood
