Review of sussex
Lars Luis Linek is a professional musician for over 30 years. Main instrument is 'mouth-organ'. In the course of his career has been involved thousand production with several artists.
After his 'Blues In Germany' cd appeared in 1997 on this triple cd Linek illustrate the contemporary German Blues. Of course, only present a small selection of what's really happening on the German Blues scene these days.

On the first cd we can listen the singer Floy. She's accompained by the Lars Luis Linek Band with Martin Scheffler and Abi Wallensten on guitar and slide. Floy are a real happening.

On the second cd presents several guest artists from German Blues as Roger Cicero, percussionist Robbie Smith, Abi Wallenstein on guitar, Herb Geller on sax and Wolfgang Schluter on vibraphone.

The third, and last cd of this set is completely dedicated to the great singer and guitarist Tom Shaka. Tom stands for traditional blues and loves the dark side of this low down dirty genre. His concerts are incredibly intense and true 'celebrations of the Blues'.

Ronnie Douglas Blues Band - Big Borther

Styles : Modern Electric Blues (Diatonic Harp)
Released : 2001

01 - On My Way
02 - You Don't Know
03 - Don't You Know?
04 - Big Brother
05 - Foolish
06 - Highway 44
07 - Good Time Baby
08 - Why Am I Drinkin'?
09 - Blow Wind Blow
10 - Whose Been Talking?

Ronnie Douglas is one of many incredibly talented aboriginal musicians. An Ojibway from the Mnjikaning (Rama) First Nation in Ontario, he is the winner of the 1999 Toronto Blues Society New Talent Search Contest.

Douglas' debut disc, Big Brother, won the 2001 Best Blues recording at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards. Recorded live off the floor, it contains 10 tracks (including eight originals), plays for 47 minutes and was produced by the Ronnie Douglas Blues Band and Stephen K. Henry.

At times, the band's country, R&B and rock roots surface but all tunes are rich in the old Chicago Blues tradition with predictable themes of women and drinking. Though this CD may not attract many new listeners to the genre, it is oh-so-good for those already converted. If you are a purist who feels traditional blues should only be performed by African-Americans, take the time to learn the cultural and musical parallels between them and First Peoples.

With a voice sounding like a cross between Jimmie Vaughan and ZZ Top, Ronnie sings all the songs and plays guitar. The rest of the band includes: Dave Hewitt, drums; Peter Loudon, bass; Bob Federer, keyboards; and Greg Duncan, harmonica.

Picture a stripped-back, "unplugged" blues disc and you will be ready for Big Brother. The keyboards and harp are invigorating throughout the entire disc and support Ronnie's forefront vocals, particularly on On My Way, where ragtime piano is also included. This composition is also featured on the CD Skin Tight Blues - First Peoples Blues Compilation.

You Don't Know contains a slow but memorable rhythm where the organ looms like a dark storm cloud. The lyrics are about the inspiration and support that can only be experienced via a loving relationship. Chess-era blues emerges on Don't You Know? Here, Duncan's harp doesn't wail, but glides while Federer's organ grooves majestically. Meanwhile, Douglas's guitar work is so simple, it is advanced.

Good Time Baby is in the vein of the Allman Brothers' version of "Stormy Monday". Why Am I Drinkin'? is a humourous reflection on the many reasons why drinking should not be such a popular pastime. Ronnie's arrangement of Muddy Waters' timeless Blow Wind Blow meshes perfectly with the original tunes. In fact, if you didn't recognize the song's name or the lyrics, you may not think it is a cover.

A couple of instrumentals showcase this band's two greatest strengths, those being the keyboard and harp work. The title track is a shuffle while Highway 44 is a lively number with a swagging and intertwining organ.

Though perhaps not progressive enough to stand out in a crowd with elements bordering on stereotypical, Big Brother does demonstrate solid musical talent complementing Douglas' songwriting abilities.

James 'The Sleeping Giant' Winfield - The Sleeping Giant

Styles : Soul Blues, R&B
Released : 2007

01 - Lonely, Lonely, Nights
02 - Flip, Flop, Fly
03 - Now You Know
04 - Sick and Tired
05 - I Waited Too Long
06 - I Don't Take It So Hard
07 - I'm Tore Down
08 - The Things That I've Used to Do
09 - Hallelujah, I Love Her So
10 - Precious Lord

The record, the rhythm and blues singer's first single, dates to the mid-1960s. Copies are exceedingly rare; this one, a gift from a WWOZ-FM disc jockey in 2005, is his only copy.

Until this year, it was not just Winfield's first, but his only, recording. After 40 years of repairing cars, he finally returned to a studio and cut "Lonely Lonely Nights," his first-ever full length album. Tonight at Ernie K-Doe's Mother-in-Law Lounge, James "The Sleeping Giant" Winfield, 64, makes his debut as a headliner, for an 8 p.m. CD release party.

James Winfield has spent his life around New Orleans R&B. He’s hung out the Dew Drop Inn. He worked alongside Lee Dorsey at Dorsey’s body shop. He had one single in the late 1960s for the obscure New Orleans Trend label. When that failed to make noise, he gave up music until he learned bass guitar after his 50th birthday. Winfield’s new record, Lonely, Lonely Nights, shows a confidence and ease with New Orleans music. He has a warm voice with the slight hint of a rasp or falsetto when he wants it. His song selection runs the gamut from Earl King’s “Lonely Lonely Nights” to Chris Kenner’s “Sick and Tired,” to the ending “Precious Lord.” However, there is little to distinguish this studio effort. The arrangements are standard. The sound of the recording is neither particularly modern nor J&M Studios vintage. The listener is left wishing that Winfield would show more emotion such as the catch in his voice in “Lonely Lonely Nights” or the soft yelp during “The Things I Used to Do.” The band also suffers from the same malady by not reaching for something a little more intense or beyond the relative, not-bad-but-not-particularly-inspiring level of playing that is exhibited here. This is a good record in a style that few people in or out of New Orleans are pursuing, but neither the band nor Winfield live up to the level of company Winfield has kept, nor the praise that OffBeat’s Jeff Hannusch’s informative liner notes suggest it merits.

Sheba was born Martha Booker with twin sister Mary Booker in Sunflower Mississippi. Sheba learned to sing the blues while her sister fell into her father's footsteps singing gospel music. Their father Leroy Booker a gospel singer that traveled all over the south selling insurance; he was call the singing insurance man.

The cotton fields, and the church, that's where Sheba started singing. Sheba's family was sharecroppers barely making it, when Sheba was 12 years old her mom left for Florida in search of opportunities, and later returned to get Sheba and her brothers and sisters.

They all came to South Florida in a Migrants Worker Bus. The family started working in the tomatoes, bean fields, and lime groves in Homestead Florida. There were many other people that had left the Delta in search of a new life. The work was very hard but singing helped them make it through the day; often hands bleeding from the thorns on the lime trees and running from the snakes in the fields. It was very painful.

Sheba formed a group, she named The Grove Girls. They would sing in all the fields and on the bus on their way to and from work. Years later her family moved from Homestead to Miami. Sheba met musician Freddie Nelson, she teamed up with Freddie and together they moved to New York. Freddie and Sheba forming a group called The Swingers. Freddie and Sheba did their first recording joined by one of New York Big Bands. In the Big Apple where Sheba had the opportunity to meet with Red Fox, Flip Wilson, Arthur Prysock, and Carmen McCray.

In New York Sheba was introduced to the sultry sounds of Billie Holiday and fell in love with her music; that why you can hear the flavoring of Billie in some of her songs. The Swingers performed in places such as Under the Stairs" Jimmy Ryan’s Village Gate" and The Library Club. After fifteen years of abuses treatment from Freddie both mental and physical, with pain in her heart Sheba had to move on.

Sheba returned to Miami and teamed up with Yosiah Israel who was a keyboard player, he immediately fell in love with her voice and together they produced numerous original songs. Sheba and Yosiah were jazzy performers and were able to be seen at clubs like, Top of the Home, Supper club, in Hollywood Florida, Emilio in Davie Florida where Shaba had a chance to present her one of Billie Holiday styles. One night Sheba remembers a fan giving her two hundred dollars to sing Good Morning Heartache.

After leaving Mississippi Sheba did not sing the blues, she was ashamed of coming from a state that was so hard on black people. In those days when you said you were from the Delta, people would make fun of you and call you country. Yosiah convince Sheba about the Blues, little did he know that he was taking her right back to her Mississippi roots. Once more she had to leave another man because of mental and physical abuses and pain in her heart.

Sheba found great enjoyment listen to BB King, Koko Taylor, Jimmie Reed, Etta James, and all the great Delta singers (including Elvis) Sheba started singing with Wild Rob Moore Blues Band, singing at a club called the Poor House, the owner Bob wanted her to sing at the Ft. Lauderdale Blues Fest, this is where Sheba met Ken Minahan he like her voice and took over putting a band behind her called The Rhythm Kings.

Sheba and The Rhythm Kings went all over, from the Florida Keys ,all the way back to Mississippi where she did a live radio performance singing Billie Holiday's famous song Strange Fruit. Shortly after Sheba produced the Miss Good -n-Plenty CD, it receives some airtime on DMX Blues station. There has always been growth in pain for her after five successful years it was the end of Sheba and The Rhythm Kings. Sheba survived it picked up her tracks and started doing a singles at parties, clubs, and hotels.

After the breakup with the Rhythm Kings she tried other bands, True Blue Band, where she pickup some new songs that on her CD. Sheba has her own band The Soul Kings. Sheba has taken control of her life, and music and doing her own things, she is in charge, and it showed in her CD, Butter on My Rolls.

Jenny Bohman - Live At Mosebacke

Styles : Acoustic Blues (Diatonic Harp)
Released : 2011

01 - The Party is Over
02 - Billys Walk
03 - Coming Home
04 - I Just Want Youre Money
05 - Another Woman
06 - Waste
07 - I Wanna Be Loved
08 - The Reason Why

Although the year was 1977 not listening all Swedish high school kids on the punk. Some discovered the blues instead. Jenny Bohman saw a friend fall at a piano and just, completely out of hand, she began driving boogie woogie. Without scores! Jenny was flabbergasted. She had been playing classical piano since she was small and had been able to get through the whole "Für Elise" even as a ten year old, with all the crescendos and diminuendon and everything. Now she tried to learn to play piano boogie but it did not work at all. So Jenny ended with piano. And started with the guitar instead. This time without any notes. Blue Tradition must be learned by other means.

Harmonica came a few years later, when she traveled around by train and decided to stay a few months in Paris. She lived at the Pompidou Center with a bunch of bohemians. Portrait Painters, hobo and street musician. Fakirs used to let Jenny take on their bodies, or hold her high above their heads as they walked on broken glass. She was short and dilute, so she worked well for the task. She also had to borrow a harmonica from one of the street musicians. When she came home to Stockholm again harmonica was her main instrument.

In the late '80s and early '90s, there were actually people who could support themselves full time as a blues musician. The blues had a strong period. Jenny resigned from his job at a service to tour with Monaco Blues Band in a large, converted coach. Germany was an important market. Was once the main act on a motorcycle hit in Berlin and played for 25 000 German bikers. They cheered just as much to Jenny for the Polish and East German strippers who had acted "dressing".

But Jenny never came to be associated with the large format. Blue scene would shrink, and in a genre that was already commercially slim established herself in an even narrower subgenre: country blues. It was so narrow that it was difficult to know what at all to do with it. Not even the blues festivals, it felt natural. Blues Festival will be easy röjiga. Then took her other projects, Little Jenny & The Blue Bean's better. In the case of country blues so you can say that it was Jenny Bohman, who made the music in Sweden. There was no precedent, and now when she died, it is nobody else on tour.

During the period between the recording and release of her solo album "Coming home" was her producer and fellow musicians Tomas Almkvist suddenly removed. It was now she was told that she had suffered one of the most malignant forms of cancer there is. She was very anxious to get their slice of time, and the release show of "Coming Home" in October last year was an intense concert loaded with life and death. Although the concert is now released on disc.

Recorded live at the famous Mosebacke in Stockholm, Sweden, friends, family and fans of Jenny's crowded the room, but you could still sense the common sadness that this person who was loved so dearly was stricken with cancer. Then Jenny took to the stage.

Absolutely no.
This CD enough to cause such a mistake.
Very elegant, simple and clean sounds, understated performances...album of the year until now, although in my opinion.
Indeed, difficult to meet with excellent CD in these days, recommend this CD strongly!

Unfortunately she died.  this is her last album....it's a pity.

Every day of the new album has been released. It is indeed difficult to meet a great album. Expect to be disappointed to listen something new ... In an iterative process for this, seems natural for them to hang on which listened a excellent CD in the past.

This CD has a deep and lasting Impress!!

Red Rooster Revisited play traditional Chicagoblues, with influences from all those great blues musicians like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Magic Sam, B B King, and so on. The band consists of Björn Elldin (guitar, vocals), Per Ängkvist (guitar, vocals), Andrea Ängkvist Resch (piano/organ), Lars Persson (bass) and Per Lindberg (drums) – all of them great musicians who have been playing the blues for quite a while.
Björn Elldin, younger brother to the legendary harmonica player Sture Elldin, grew up with the blues, listening to his elder brother Sture’s records already as a little kid. Only 17 years old he was asked to play in Chicago Express when one of the regular members went ill. Also the other members of the band are all well-experencied musicians who have played the blues in lots of different constellations.
Everything started in 2001 when Björn and Lars, who had been playing together for a while, formed Red Rooster Revisited. After a while Andrea joined the band, followed by Per Ä. and Per L. Since then we have had much fun playing together, a feeling we want to share with our audience. Many people think that blues is sad music – nothing could be more wrong! Blues is like life in general,
The band has been around since 2001 but appear in several different forms. Members are now divided between Malmo and Stockholm. They often perform as a trio, but also as a quintet with the strengthening of the pair Ängkvist from Stockholm.

There are many different opinions as to what the future of blues harmonica will be. Memphis vocalist and harmonica player Brandon Santini is undeniably a worthy player to keep an eye on as the next decade unfolds. His name is worthy of conversations that involve Jason Ricci, Billy Gibson, Dennis Gruenling, Rick Estrin and other frontline harmonica players that have become part of a new wave in the blues world. With tasteful speed and licks, he combines his respect to traditional blues with a present, colorful style of playing that is often compared to Paul Butterfield, James Cotton, or Sonny Boy Williamson II. Raised in North Carolina, Brandon relocated to Memphis in 2003 where he began to absorb the sounds and culture of the Delta and north Mississippi Hill Country, honing his craft night after night, sweating it out in local Beale Street clubs just like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, & B.B. King. For seven years, Brandon fronted the Blues Music Award nominated band Delta Highway and has toured relentlessly throughout North America and has visited seven foreign countries (including a 2009 Bluzapalooza tour to Cairo, Egypt) bringing his distinct voice and playing style to music lovers everywhere throughout the world!

Biography
Big Daddy Wilson was born less than 50 years ago in a small town called Edenton, North Carolina. The population of Edenton counts less than 6000, 55% African Americans, 25% below the poverty line. “We were very poor but I had a very beautiful childhood“, Wilson remembers. “Me and my sisters were raised by Mom and Grandma. We lived a simple life, we went to church every Sunday, school on weekdays. I also worked back then on the tobacco plantation and in the cotton fields, I was a real country boy.“ Wilson sang in church but he never thought about going on stage. “I was extremely shy.“ His guardians meant well for the fatherless boy and they often sent him to church also during the week. “That won´t hurt him, keeps little Wilson away from drugs and off the streets.“
Young Wilson quit school at 16, and sometime later joined the US Army. Being a poor black man in the south and living in a small town, jobs were scarce. After being stations in Germany, the young man became homesick. “I found out the quickest way to go back home was to see that you got married. They’ll allow you a vacation time about two weeks to go home to get married. Wilson convinced his officers of his impending wedding and returned Stateside, refusing to return to Germany. After six weeks his mom was so worried that she begged him to go back to the military. “And so I was back in Germany.“

A few years later Wilson met a German girl who became his wife. She is the reason for him staying and also the reason for a poem which became Wilson´s first song.

And then Wilson heard the blues for the first time. Back in Edenton he had listened to music only in church and from the local, country radio station. But now he went for the first time to a real blues concert. “I met the blues here in Germany. I didn’t know what the blues was before“ Big Daddy Wilson says. “It was here that I found a part of me that was missing for so long in my life.“ It did not take long and the shy guy who had written some poems started looking for melodies. He went on stage, jammed all over the German blues scene and made an impression with his warm and soulful voice. He began touring with bands and as a duo and even released a few records. “My sister came all the way to see me perform and she couldn’t believe it. No, that’s not my brother. It seems like all my shyness was gone ? thanks to my music. “

Champion Jack Dupree, Louisiana Red, Eddie Boyd... many musicians who made Europe their home and brought the blues with them succeeded here better than in the U.S. Even Luther Allison lived in Europe for 14 years before his big break.

And now there´s Big Daddy Wilson, an American singer and songwriter who found his home in northern Germany. But something is different regarding Big Daddy Wilson. When he came over from the U.S. there was no blues in his baggage. He initially discovered the blues here in Germany which is where he will begin his international career.
With his international solo debut on RUF Records Big Daddy Wilson is going to take one step further in his late career as a musician. For “Love Is The Key“ he recorded his own songs exclusively with a small band; taking it back to the roots, often reduced to acoustic instruments, but always full of soul. You can listen to his very first song here,“ Anna“ the song about his wife. Gospel is the foundation for “Keep Your Faith In Jah“, but this doesn’t keep the songwriter Wilson from praising the talents of a gypsy queen from New Orleans, “Jazzy Rose“. In “Hard Days Work“, Big Daddy uses monotone drones for hypnotic effects on the listener, while breezy off beats Jamaica-style let “Dreaming“ to swing along. Autobiographic aspects can be found elsewhere: “Ain´t No Slave“reminds us of the African-American history and at the same time makes us aware of Wilson’s grown confidence. His good friend Eric Bibb guests on two songs about Wilson’s roots ,”Country Boy” , “Walk A Mile In My Shoes”. He’s very proud of Bibb´s presence because “I’ve learnt so much from him,” says Wilson.

Release Notes
After the positive responds and success of the "Love Is The Key" CD and the "Love Is The Key Tour" the mission was simple and clear to me, to use this platform to spread love everywhere I go. The goal was to produce a fully acoustic CD, using the guys that I am on the road with "The Big Daddy Wilson Trio". Singing and playing the songs that my forefathers played. Using this special gift that "The Almighty" gave me.

That is why this new album is so special to me, it is really the second leg of the "Love Is The Key Tour". The journey "Thumb A Ride". It is not about where you have been or where you are going, it is all about the journey. It is about what you have learned along the way, and who you may have touched and those who have touched you. On this journey I have been blessed and touched by so many beautiful people.

I just cannot name them all. But right now, I am thinking about two great musicians, that I have the chance to ride with, who have inspired and influenced me and the songs of this CD in a great way. I am talking about my right and left hand: Mr. Jochen "Skinny Joe" Bens and Mr. Michael "Big Chief" van Merwyk.

I am very proud and happy to say that all songs on this CD are composed by the "Big Daddy Wilson Trio". And that is why I call this one "Thumb A Ride", cause it is all about the journey. Now, "After all is said and done, more is always said than done" let us do this. Feel me! ~Ruf Records.

The Blackschu Band - A Touch Of Anarchy

Released : 2008

01 - Beat St

04 - Sister Sadie

06 - Alright, Okay, You Win
07 - Key To The Highway
08 - Tuxedo Junction
09 - Jumpin` At The Woodside

All three members of this group have a wealth of professional experience with (literally) thousands of gigs between them.
John Black and Ben Schumann formed the BlackSchu Band in 2004 with the main objective of enjoying every note played. This has largely been achieved. In 2007 they embarked on a project of playing blues and boogie without guitar or bass. While seeming foolhardy to some, it did fulfill the main objective of being really enjoyable. Featuring Richard Booth on sax, they went on to record their first CD at ArtSound recording studios in a session that is said to have had the musicians ‘tearing up’ the floor from the first note to the last.

The BlackSchu Band plays classic boogie-woogie infused with blues and jazz. Every note counts with their infectious grooves, heartfelt vocals and wailing solos.

Personnel
John Black - vocals and piano
Ben Schumann - drums
Richard Booth - sax

...More his mighty tenor sax squawking and bleating with wild-eyed abandon, Big Jay McNeely blew up a torrid R&B tornado from every conceivable position — on his knees, on his back, being wheeled down the street on an auto mechanic's "creeper" like a modern-day pied piper. As one of the titans who made tenor sax the solo instrument of choice during rock's primordial era, McNeely could peel the paper right off the walls with his sheets of squealing, honking horn riffs.

Cecil McNeely and his older brother Bob (who blew baritone sax lines with Jay in unison precision on some of Jay's hottest instrumentals) grew up in Los Angeles, where jazz reigned on Watts' bustling nightlife strip. Inspired by Illinois Jacquet and tutored by Jack McVea, McNeely struck up a friendship with Johnny Otis, co-owner of the popular Barrelhouse nitery. Ralph Bass, a friend of Otis, produced McNeely's debut date for Savoy Records in 1948 (Savoy boss Herman Lubinsky tagged the saxist Big Jay, in his eyes a more commercial name than Cecil). McNeely's raucous one-note honking on "The Deacon's Hop" gave him and Savoy an R&B chart-topper in 1949, and his follow-up, "Wild Wig," also hit big for the young saxist with the acrobatic stage presence.

From Savoy, McNeely moved to Exclusive in 1949, Imperial in 1950-1951, King's Federal subsidiary in 1952-1954 (where he cut some of his wildest waxings, including the mind-boggling "3-D"), and Vee-Jay in 1955. McNeely's live shows were the stuff that legends are made of — he electrified a sweaty throng of thousands packing L.A.'s Wrigley Field in 1949 by blowing his sax up through the stands and then from home plate to first base on his back! A fluorescently painted sax that glowed in the dark was another of his showstopping gambits.

In 1958, McNeely cut his last hit in a considerably less frantic mode with singer Little Sonny Warner. The bluesy "There Is Something on Your Mind" was committed to tape in Seattle but came out on disc jockey Hunter Hancock's Swingin' imprint the next year. McNeely's original was a huge smash, but it was eclipsed the following year by New Orleans singer Bobby Marchan's dramatic R&B chart-topping version for Fire. Since then, it's been covered countless times, including a fine rendition by Conway Twitty!

Honking saxists had fallen from favor by the dawn of the '60s, so McNeely eventually became a mailman and joined Jehovah's Witnesses (no, that's not the name of a combo). Happily, his horn came back out of the closet during the early '80s. McNeely went on to record for his own little label and tour the country and overseas regularly.
